Mark, Leon and Lindsay

Caddie, Allan with Leon on the 18th tee, RQ

Leon lines up a par putt on the 18th green…. and yes he sank it !!
This year’s Australian PGA was to be played in November 2021 but has been postponed to January 13-16 2022.
The PGA set up a Road to PGA opportunity for Queensland club golfers for a chance to play the same course as the PGA players.
Sandgate had 26 players vie for that opportunity and Leon Newall had the best score on the nominated club day ( 69 nett playing with a 17 handicap). This gave him the opportunity to play at RQ on January 9, 2022.
The course was beautifully presented. Closely mown yet wide fairways seemed generous compared to what we have become accustomed to at Sandgate. Fairway traps were something new to negotiate and the greens played hard but true. Leon opened with a very commendable 17 points for the front 9. His birdie on the 2nd hole was pure poetry… 7 iron approach and then a breaking 3 metre putt which never looked like missing.
15 points on the back nine was not quite enough to win the day. Finishing with 32 points from a daily handicap of 14, Leon was just 4 shots shy of the Day’s winner (36 points).
